Afro-Brazilian Studies is the study of the historical, political and cultural production of afro-brasileiros, or Brazilian people with African ancestry. In 2003, the Law of Education in Ethnic-Racial Relations was passed in Brazil — the country with the highest number of African descendants outside of Nigeria — creating a requirement to include African contributions to Brazilian society at all levels of Brazilian education. In this space, we explore Afro-Brazilian cultural production that intersects with class, gender, politics, sexuality, urban identities, and language.
